wilsoncgp 9,228
Guedioura (sp?) Is supposed to be good from set pieces. I wonder if that was a big reason behind his signing. Wouldn't be surprised, we're awful from set pieces. It amazes me, last season and especially the season before we were excellent at set pieces. Seem to recall a couple of very clever ones (Adomah scored from one at the riverside vs Ipswich iirc) which seem to have just completely vanished. I was reminded about it when watching West Brom play us as they're incredibly astute and effective from dead ball situations. Would like to see a return to better deliveries and smarter routines. When we have big units like Negredo, Bernardo, Gestede, Friend, etc. who we can stick in the box it's criminal to watch the ball fail to clear the first man. On that note I'd have Traore making near post runs with his pace to give them something to panic about. When we're delivering the ball he's either not in the box, or if he is, completely static near the goalkeeper. Yeah, I guess the coaching team don't see the point in working hard on set-pieces when we have nobody who can beat the first man with a delivery. I'd say Gaston is probably the best we have. Downing's deliveries have gotten remarkably worse.
Borodane 6,246
Adama will play and we'll have 3 holding mids, I reckon. Reason being, we'll be looking to counter. We can't rely on attacking football because, frankly, we can't play it. Also doubt Karanka will start Guedioura as we all know what he's like with bedding in new signings. So I'm going for: GK - Valdes RB - Barragan CB - Chambers CB - Gibson LB - Friend CM - Clayton CM - de Roon CM - Forshaw RW - Traore ST - Negredo LW - Downing Could easily be Fabio for Barragan and Stuani for Downing, though. Yes to this, although I don't think Friend and Chambers are ready for a start. Ideally I'd take Ayala instead of Espinosa. We definately need to try and take advantage of our set pieces so that's why I'd start Downing. Free kicks and corners simply have to be delivered better. With Forshaw and Clayton taking them we might aswell not bother. I really can't fathom how a professional ball player can't put a decent ball into the box. Totally agree. I am a pretty pants footballer. But I can float/chip/drive a ball into a good area 9 times out of 10. How a professional who practises it every day can't is beyond me. We seem to have had poor set pieces for a few years now. I've wondered this too. We are most definitely rubbish at set pieces, but I've kind of come to the conclusion that it must be harder than it looks at a professional level. It's really poor not getting the ball past the first man (which we fail to do quite often). However, there's also not much point in clearing the first man with a floaty ball that drops down from too high, because professional defenders will defend that all day long. The ball needs to come in with more pace/power/direction to give the attacker something to attack (Look at Carrol's first goal for West Ham against us). I guess it must be so much harder to do that, that the likes of Clayton/Forshaw can't seem to manage it? The ball needs to come into the box like Fichers corner for Stuanis goal at West Ham. I appreciate that is difficult and less will do but our set pieces against West Brom were criminal.
Tom 2,492
Forshaw shouldn't be allowed on set pieces at all.
LukeR 44
Fabio is Brazilian. Surely it's in their DNA to be able to whip in a free kick
"KM" 1,653
Forshaw shouldn't be allowed on set pieces at all. Isn't this new lad from Watford meant to be a decent set piece taker?
Dan1234 1,048
Downing/Fischer and Gaston are all capable of good deliveries. 1 of them should be in the team tbh.
Tom 2,492
Forshaw shouldn't be allowed on set pieces at all. Isn't this new lad from Watford meant to be a decent set piece taker? I think so. I also think he'll go straight into the side. There is usually a reluctance from the manager to throw new players right in, but I get the feeling that AK might fancy Guedioura's chances against Wanyama a little more than Forshaw's. MowbraysMoustache 9
I think leadbitter will be in for this one.
Uwe 3,543
You don't always put your best free kick/corner taker on that duty. For example Negredo could be the best but he needs to be in the box get his head on it looking for knock downs etc. So it tends to be the best of what you don't want in the box. (Unless it's a clear shooting opportunity) But I agree some of ours are dreadful
Snowblind 1,711
Aye, I was thinking Gibson can play a good long pass... But you want him in the box to win headers.

wilsoncgp 9,228
Our team against Spurs last time we played at White Hart Lane. Ouch. Middlesbrough: Jones; Wheater, Huth (Taylor 46), Pogatetz, Bates, Hoyte (Johnson 70), O’Neil, Arca, Downing, Aliadiere (King 53), Tuncay. Subs: Turnbull (gk); Walker, Emnes, Alves. Can't even work out what system we were playing there, I guess this? Jones Hoyte Wheater Huth Pogatetz O'Neil Bates Arca Downing Tuncay Aliadiere Spurs that day: Tottenham Hotspur: Gomes; Assou-Ekotto, Woodgate, Dawson, Zokora, Lennon, Modric (O’Hara 73), Palacios, Jenas (Huddlestone 64), Pavlyuchenko (Bent 53), Keane. Subs: Cudicini (gk); Corluka, Chimbonda, Bentley. Guessing: Gomes Zokora Woodgate Dawson Assou-Ekotto Lennon Palacios Jenas Modric Pavlyuchenko Keane
sanddancer 1,964
Not enough to beat Spurs unfortunately I believe it will be 3-0. With 21 points I worry if we can do enough to stay up. It will be very close and I hope it's not down to the last game of the season

It will be very close and I hope it's not down to the last game of the season Our end of season run in is what nightmares are made of, so we need to pick up some points very soon. It certainly going to be tight but I really do think that we are one of the better teams of the bottom 6 so hopefully we can actually show that.
diggerlad07 3,648
What I would like to see Valdes Chambers ayala Gibson Barragan Fabio De-roon forshaw Clayton Adama Negredo Stuani offers nothing on the wing and adama would be quite frightening through the middle, the way he gets past players at ease reminds me so much of when Juninho first joined! He gets fans off their feet and that lifts the rest of the team Im going for a 1 - 1 draw here
