Boro v Wolverhampton Wanderers (a) 0-1

We are not barcelona and do not have the same quality!

I'm not criticising his changes, I'm criticising our formation of starting defensively with 3 holding midfielders.

Is it just me that can see that it doesnt/never will work for us?

Pretty much, although Lino usually agrees with you on most things.

You say that we can't play 433 even though it's been successful for many teams, because we don't have the quality of players. Surely that suggests that there is nothing wrong with 433 as a system, but there is something wrong with the players that we have.

But are we really saying our players aren't good enough and our way of playing won't work e first game of the season. Let's give it a bit more of a go than 90 mins with new players

Braithwaite didn't do anything for me. I couldn't believe he missed. Still early days and not worried. Bamford played alot better than Fletcher. We need two wingers, a centre half and a creative midfielder for me

we need the right players to fit monks system which doest involve attacking midfielders or wingers it appears. de roon can do one, he wants away imo. forshaw was better than howson and de roon. bamford right britt center and fletch or braith left. with forshaw and howson cm clayton behind. back 4 were sound.

Massive over-reaction to an Ayala mistake on here, granted it was an awful one, but Friend, Gibbo, Dimi etc have made plenty of mistakes over the years. As Clayton said, he's still one of the best CB's in this division.

He *can be* but he's got no right to be considered one at the moment. Dunno if he needs confidence or game time but he doesn't look half the player he was before his "injury issues." On song he's an excellent defender at this level, Monk's got to figure out what he needs to do to get that player back.

All things considered, I've not heard about Ayala having a terrible game. Nor did he have a bad game last week either, in fact he had a really good game.

One mistake in this game that plenty like myself probably didn't even watch and people are going mad saying he's lost it.

He had a bad season last season, didn't appear in as many games as we would have liked him to and games like the Wednesday game, you wonder what was going on in his head to make such a silly challenge. Something wasn't right under the last manager, for sure.

But I've seen nothing that suggests he's lost his head so far this season. Certainly not enough to say get shot of him. Do people really want Baptiste or Fry in ahead of him? Or even Shotton? I'm pretty sure I don't.

Just think, this time next week this forum will be in uproar after we get battered at Wolves.  The summer has flown by really.

Sadly, I think you might be on to something there. Tough opening fixture.

Bump.

Arguably the toughest opening fixture we could have had. I'm confident we're still in for a good season.

Ayala will more than make up for that mistake over the course of the season

Assombolonga and Bamford looked sharp, play them both and we will get goals. Would much prefer to see us revert to our old shape, struggled to move the ball out from the back.

Positives:

- We only lost by 1 goal. Goal-difference is important, even more important than points some would say.

Negatives:

- We lost. Obviously not a big deal, as it's the first game of the season, and there's absolutely no way in hell those points might mean the difference between promotion/play-offs....

- We don't have a player at the club that is deemed more capable than Clayton in taking set-pieces.
