Boro vs Sunderland (FA Cup) 2-0 (Gestede, Braithwaite)

Recommended Posts

The FA Cup is upon us, and we have a tasty home tie coming up against North East rivals Sunderland.

In the last outing Boro turned on the style in the secon half against PNE to come back from an abysmal first half and win the game 3-2. New gaffer Tony Pulis made a few changes for that game by bringing in Guediora, Christie and dropping Braithwaite completely from the squad. Sunderland succumbed to a disappointing 0-1 loss at home to Barnsley and still find themselves firmly in the relegation mire.

I think Tony Pulis is going to use this game to see a few other players, and I wouldn't be surprised to see any of Fry, Forshaw, Baker, Fletcher, Bamford and Braithwite start. Clayton I have no idea about, but if he's fit and not going anywhere he should get some minutes.

Borodanes lineup:

-------Randolph--------

Shotton-Gibson-Fry-Friend

-------Baker-Leadbitter/Clayton-------

Traore-----Braithwaite--Fletcher

----------Bamford------------

If Clayton isn't in contention it will be Leadbitter to add a bit of bite to the midfield. I reckon Downing and Britt will be rested and Bamford, Braithwaite and Fletcher will be given their chances. Could also be Rudy for either Bamford og Braithwaite.

We should win this game if the league positions are anything to go by, so here is hoping for a 2-0 win and a chance for me to get 3 consecutive matchday threads.

I don't think they have a matchday thread yet, but will see if one pops up during the week.

Talking points:

What changes to expect?

Do we want to go all in for the FA Cup?

Can we expect the team to start the game with the desire shown in the second half at Preston?

Crowd numbers?

2-1 Boro, Bamford with them both.

Good time for this game, breaks up the Championship a bit with a chance for Pulis to look at more players and experiment with formations. Not too bothered about the result, or the FA cup in general to be honest.

I expect Bamford, Gestede and Traore to start. I would expect that Shotton will be back at RB from the start and he might play Fry alongside Ayala. If Clayton is fit he might get a start too.

I can see it being something along the lines of:

Dimi

Christie

Fry

Gibson

Fabio

Traore

Clayton

Guedioura

Tavernier

Gestede

Fletcher

I think Pulis will want some continuation to keep the momentum from the second half going - maybe only 1 or 2 changes. Would love to See Clayts alongside Howson. Won't do Britt any harm to learn he has to work to be first choice.

-------------------- Randolph ------------------

-- Shotton --- Ayala --- Gibson -- Friend --

----------- Clayton ------ Howson ------------

---- Traore ----- Bamford ---- Downing ----

-------------------- Gestede -------------------

I believe Pulis will take the chance to test some more of the players in the squad but still want to have strong team and I could see the following team.

Randolph

Shotton- Ayala - Fry - Friend

Traore - Clayton - Howson - Tavernier

Bamford - Braithwaite

Chance for Fry, Friend, Clayton, Traore, Tavernier and Banford/ Braithwaite to impress.

Should win comfortable hopefully

In his interview after the last match, Pulis said that he’s going to change the team for The cup match so that he can have a look at a few players. Normally I’d be dead against making too many changes for an FA cup match, but the circumstances are slightly different this year. I’d say fair play Tony have a look at some players, but for goodness sake don’t change the goalkeeper, I can never see the point of resting goalkeepers.

I agree he will change a fair few.

I think there'll be changes too. As Billy said, regardless of how you usually feel about that, Pulis needs these games to see what he can make of this squad. One thing I think we can guess is that the young lads like Wing and Tavernier will struggle to get into the squad this weekend. Even with the team below, we're missing Forshaw and Clayton who haven't appeared for us under Pulis yet. Think Fry, Baker, Johnson and Fletcher will be guaranteed starters.

Christie Fry Gibson Friend

Traore Guedioura Baker Johnson

Fletcher Bamford

Just seen that Sunderland are bringing 4,500 on saturday. Could be a cracking atmosphere. Will we break the 30 k. barrier? As of yesterday I think we've sold 19k so 23.5 k in total.

I hope that's not true.

Don't think we'll sell this one out to be fair. Shame considering Sunderland are bringing so many could be a good atmosphere. Almost like a bit of a free hit really this one and I wouldn't be surprised to see Pulis completely rotate the squad to get a good look at a few more players.

What? That we haven't sold more than 19k? I'd expect that to increase as the week goes on. Don't season ticket holder have until late this week to decide whether they want to keep their seat?

Derby game, discounted tickets, Sunderland bringing 4.5k, good chance to wallop them, see more of Pullis' new Boro. Will be disappointing if this doesn't come close to selling out.

I definately hope you will be right Humpty. Could be a cracking atmosphere. But we only got 29k in the league game so I doubt this will be a sellout despite the new manager effect and the encouraging second half against PNE. Hope we break the 30k barrier.

    • DZ I do not know if you are having issues at home, work or otherwise but of late you have been far more aggressive than usual and I simply can not allow you to respond in such a way towards another member of the forum purely for his opinion. There are many other ways you can reply and respond to matters you do not agree with but this time you are pushing the boundaries of decency. The swear filter does work but you intended to state what you have just done so. Give it some thought about how you have been on the forum and try and calm down. Please take this as a public warning that this type of interaction will not be tolerated towards good people. Your'e a good lad and a valued member of the forum don't bring issues you may be suffering onto the forum for lashing out purposes. Hopefully you may send Blanco a pm offering an apology. Believe me this is not up for debate and I will not get into a conversation about it. Thanks
    • How important do you think a captain is to the side both on and off the pitch? Very important on the pitch, the captain should be the managers right hand man when they are not carrying out his instructions to hold players to account. He should also be the player who puts an arm around young players when they make a mistake and let them know its okay just learn from it but try make amends. Communication and organising on the pitch is also a big part of the role. Off the pitch, not so sure.  Do you think a different decision at the start of the season would leave us in a better position now? Yes do you see Britt doing any of the above particularly in difficult moments to try drag us through? then let me ask you, how many times did lead bitter do all of the above?   Would you change captains in the middle of the season right now or do you think that could lead to dressing room division? Yes change it, might help our fortunes and might actually stop some of the silly mistakes if someone holding people accountable.  Who would you like to see take over if you would? Morsy without a doubt, I see a lot of Leadbitter in him taking one for the team when opposition are looking dangerous and if you watch him he communicates with his team mates constantly. He was also captain at Wigan for 3 years before coming here and Wigan fans had nothing but praise for him which tells you a lot.
    • Problem is one we had one foreign manager in ever, you can guarantee who ever follows Warnock will be English. If I was Gibson I would do what I did when he hired karaka find a assistant coach that's been under a great manager for a long time and see if he take the job. We have a mid table squad now thanks to Warnock, we have the chance to go for something new and fresh not old and stale for the next manager. The only thing I would do is try and hold on to Ronnie Jepson if Warnock is retiring, lets not bring in an inexperienced assistant manager if this manager is new lets give him good support and advice when needed so that if things get difficult we dont have a Woodgate situation.     Having said the above I think Warnock should stay on for the rest of this season, there's no harm in what hes doing to the club hes brought a doomed club from relegation to upper mid table team in the course of a season and got rid of some of the problems with the side in clayton and friend whos legs were shot plus tried to get rid of britt who is a big problem as he's expensive and not firing. Hes also brought in players like Morsey, Hall, Kebano Watmore and Bolasie who have added to the team who other managers will actually think are solid championship players next season. Maybe next season he can turn midtable into promotion or playoffs if he stays on.
    • 70 Minutes. 70 *** MINUTES. 70 *** minutes to make changes after what, realising that hoof ball and high balls into the box wasn't working against a tall and strong Cardiff defence, shock *** horror. Neil Warnock, hang your head in shame. You got it totally *** wrong yesterday and I'm still annoyed, we could have easily won that if you'd just done what every Boro fan could see needed doing at half time. Sorry, but that's not a point gained in my eyes yesterday, that was 2 points lost. Oh and Britt can *** off forever, I never want to see that useless, lazy, arrogant *** in a Boro shirt ever again!
    • Ramirez signed for Southampton when Nigel Adkins was manager, and Hull when Steve Bruce was manager. Stuani and Kike are not flair players. But as a counterpoint, we've signed Kebano who is a French flair player whilst having the oldest most English manager possible.
