Bamford has just made me look like a right mug

Recommended Posts

Never in a million years did I see him going up against two physical centre backs, in a team who is not adverse to knocking it more direct and him holding his own. He got in front of his marker and used his strength and held it up. I always knew he had goals in him. That was not in question but I never thought he had it in him to put in that type of performance.

Hold my hands up, eat that humble pie and admit I was very very wrong about his ability to play up front on his own in a Pulis team.

Fantastic performance Paddy.

Well said, shame it took a Gestede injury for him to get the chance.

He must be dreadful in training to not get picked by consecutive managers because on the pitch he's a different class.

That's the crux of it, from what I hear. He's a bit lazy in training and doesn't necessarily acknowledge when he's struggling for form. Über confidence and all that.

The kudos for the lad comes that - when AK signed him, he was billed as a ball-greedy, selfish striker. He changed. Since then he's been billed as a Lazy, Form blind narcissist... Looks like he's developing beyond that.

The lad has his issues, but always uses the animosity and backlash from his actions to move himself forward. Fair bloody play Paddy. Long may that continue.

I've always been a Bamford fan, his class always stood out, just his ability to cope with adversity was what seemed to hinder him. Anyway I didnt see him playing well in a Pulis team either. I though he would need the figurative Gestede beside him as he always came across more as a very technical poacher rather than 1 man up front. A lot is said about AK's team, but in that team he rarely played up front by himself. He often played off a striker, broke into the box from the wing or when he was #9 then he had good support.

Delighted for him to start scoring again though

I wonder whether managers don't know how to take his posh boy persona, I know a few people that have socialised with him and say he's a lovely lad and real good laugh but he's come from a different background to your average footballer.

I remember Shaun Dyche saying because of his upbringing he hasn't had to work as hard as everyone else, I like Dyche but that's complete *** you don't get to this level by not working hard.

Look at how good he was for us under Karanka, that form is streets above anything else we've got in that position. Hopefully he's getting back to that form now.

On Sky Schteeve was saying how often he wanted to strangle him and how frustrating it could be at times working with Paddy but he always knew there was a very good striker underneath and that he preferred playing to his strenghts

Think he's a player that thrives when he's playing with that but of arrogance, but being in the wilderness for 2 years will destroy anyone's confidence which I think is a huge part of his game.

When his confidence is with him every little flick and trick (Sunderland goal) or every cute finish (1st goal last night) comes off, looks like we're finally seeing the return of Bamford. Who knows after this experience he may be back mentally stronger.

He's that type of striker you love to have on your team, but hate to play against, one that makes things look effortless and who has that air of cockiness.

I think the thing that separates Bamford from our other strikers is that he is ‘clever’ rather than ‘instinctive’. He knows where the space is, he anticipates the movement of both the ball and the defenders so well.

He clearly is not a good trainer. He hasn’t been picked regularly at any club since his last spell with us. And increasingly snippets are coming out to back up this theory. But if he keeps doing it in matches then who cares how he trains.

Up the biro.

I'm not so sure about the training thing with bamford. All the players early on in Pulis' reign were saying if you don't train hard under him and put the miles in, you don't play. Pulis has pretty consistently played bamford, so he can't be that bad/lazy in training

I would agree, I am not sure quite how ‘bad’ he really is. I think Karanka had the same approach as Pulis in the ‘if you don’t train well, you don’t play’ thing. But in one of the interviews with a player (can’t remember who? Assombolonga maybe?) and McLaren’s comments last night there were allusions to him not being great in training. Being more frustrating than exceptional. I guess we will never know for sure, but it would be a reasonable explanation as to why he was hardly picked for Burnley, Norwich, Palace. To be fair, he only really played up front last night because one striker is injured and one is bang out of form (okay, plus Bamford has 3 in 2) so maybe he is just one of those players that is far better on the pitch than the training ground.

This was debated a while back. I THINK the interview that you're talking about, when the player was asked who the worst trainer is, he answered "Bamford" because he tries clever tricks and things which don't always come off. It wasn't because Bamford was lazy.

Paul Merson by his own admission was a terrible trainer but come Saturday he did the business, some players just don't train as well as others that's how it is, but if like Merson they do it when it counts then I'll take that every time.

Yeah, that sounds about right. But you can’t inagine the Pulis, and other managers he has had like Dyche, would be impressed by trying, and failing, fancy tricks in training?

I couldn't give a crap what people look like in training, I'm interested in what they look like in games. If any manager is basing decisions on training alone they shouldn't be in the job.

Maybe you couldn't give a crap, but managers probably will, surely?

If a few players are on the fringe of a first team place (like in Premier League squads), then 'maybe' if PB isn't so good in training, other players will get the nod in front.

It's not like Bamford ever really did the business when he got on the pitch for any of his Premier League loan teams. As a result of which, all else the manager has got to go on is what he does in training.
