25 years ago today, 26th August 1995, Boro played their 1st game at the Riverside Stadium, our new home after playing at Ayresome Park for 92 seasons
A very warm sunny day seen thousands of Teessidders flocking to the Riverside in probably the biggest event in Middlesbrough for many, many years

Record signing Nick Barmby made his home debut
Chelsea were our visitors with Craig Hignett going in to the record books as the 1st goalscorer at the Riverside
Boro ran out 2-0 winners with Jan Åge Fjørtoft getting the 2nd
It was a race against time to get the ground finished & on time for the Chelsea game, the day of the game was a dry one with no alchaol license granted for the opening fixture, but the day went smoothly, the sun came out, the Boro played well & won, Bryan Robson started the saeson home fixtures with a victory

Does anyone ember the cockerel being thrown on Ayresome park pitch. It happened at a few away games too. My best memorial grounds Southampton what a great day out with thousands playing football in the parks. Hated going to Millwall and Fulham and cried like a baby at Wolves when they knocked us out the FA cup. BORO were doing well until Terry Cochrane was taking off apparently because once again he had his socks down. Known Terry for many years drank, played and drove him in his Volvo to the BONGO on many occasions. He hated playing with his socks up and shin pads on and was fined many times but by then I believe it was law.

Boro flashback - This day 29th August 1981 Bobby Murdoch took charge of his 1st Boro game at home to Spurs
With the departure of Davey Armstrong, Mark Proctor & Craig Johnston to build up the directors bank balance & IMHO, Bobby Murdoch was starting life as Boro manager with one hand tied behind his back

John Neal has resigned during the summer in protest at realising the clubs plans of selling the clubs assetts

Bobby Murdoch was replacing quality players with cheaper players who were not up to the 1st division standard, Heine Otto apart

In our line up were 3 players making their debuts
Joe Bolton from Sunderland, mick Baxter from Preston & Heine Otto, who in my honest opinion was a top class signing, I loved his style, his skill, his love of my club

Boro kicked off in blazing sunshine towards the holgate & after 11 minutes Heine Otto scored the 1st goal of the game past Spurs debutee Ray Clemence

Unfortunately our winning position was short lived & Spurs ran out 3-1 winners

A losing pattern we suffered regular throughout the season

Bobby's team

Jim Platt
John Craggs
Joe Bolton
Graham Hedley
Mick Baxter
Irvine Nattrass
Billy Woof
Heine Otto
Gary MacDonald
David Shearer
Tony McAndrew
Sub
David Hodgson

My mam & dad bought me a season ticket for my 21st, awesome

This game was Paul Wards final Boro game before his transfer to Darlo & Pat Heards debut on loan from Newcastle

Boro flashback - 6th September 1983

During the very dark days following the Boro back then there wernt many good memorable days, or nights, but this certainly is one memorable night

Boro manager, Malcolm Allison, was hopefully,  starting to put together a team that could sustain a top half position, maybe challenge the chasing pack for promotion

The Boro had enjoyed a good start to the season wining away to Pompey on the opening day of the season & drawing the only home game so far on the previous saturday v Leeds with 2 goals from Dave Currie, this game will stay in my memory forever, Boro 3 Newcastle 2, a great night, a great win, a great opener from Dave Currie, who later added a 2nd & a fantatsic winner from 18 years Gary Hamilton at the holgate end

Boro scored, Newcastle equalised, Boro scored, Newcastle equalised via Dave Mills, then bang, in the closing minutes, the ball falls to 18 year old Gary Hamilton in the box & bang, gooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllll, the balls in the back of the holgate ent

Gary runs over to us in the south terrace, never forget his reaction, absolutly brilliant, that nights emotions is what been a Boro fan is all about

Shame Dave Currie couldnt have kicked on, 86 all the young local lads who will be remebered for ever & rightly so, it would have been nice a Stockton lad been there involved

The entire east end went silent

Boro team

Kelham O'Hanlon
Darren Wood
Paul Ward
Heien Otto
Mick Baxter
Irvine Nattrass - Played every single game that season
Alan Roberts
Mick Kennedy - RIP Mick, 2nd Boro game

Boro flashback this day, 8th September 1984

Boro's 3rd game of the campaign & 2nd away game, similar to last season the Boro have started the season badly, losing the opening fixture away to Portsmouth 1-0, but worse, much worse, losing our only home game so far, no getting  smashed 5-1at Ayresome Park by Grimsby Town

This day we travelled to Notts County who had lost 4 straight defeats, in a worse turmoil than the Boro

We'll if Boro thought this would be easier than the previous 2 they were in for a rude awakening when after 15 minutes Notts County took the lead & stayed that way at HT

When the 2nd half kicked off Boro had a bit more about them & took the lead when Heine Otto equalised for his 1st goal of the season & not long after David Mills scored his 1st goal since his return to the Boro, now we need calm heads & see this game out, unfortunately, rock bottom Notts County had other ideas & scored two goals to take the lead & points

Willie Maddren, must have been pulling his hair out watching everything collapse before him

Boro team

Kelham O'Hanlon

Darren Wood

Geoff Scott - Last of 2 games, his contract was cancelled

Mick Buckley

Tony Mowbray - Made his debut exactly 24 months earlier

Irvine Nattrass

David Mills

Gary Hamikton

Heine Otto

Paul Sugrue

Dave Currie
