FAC 3rd round  - Boro flashback 3rd January 1980

Swansea 0 Boro 5

David Armstrong missed this cup tie & his 1st missed cup tie since 5th January 1974 v Grantham, Craig Johnston was also in sidelined & the middle of a 5 game out through an injury

Swansea, who were a strong 2nd divison team under manager John Toshack challenging for promotion were the bookies favourites going in to the cup game, with the MOTD cameras ready to see an FAC upset, especially with us having a weakened team, 2 vital members of our midfield out

This game will be remebered for a couple of reasons to those who attended & old enough

Firstly,  it seemed every time Swansea had a golden opportunity to score & wasted it we went up the field & scored

Secondly,  Terry Cochranes superb overhead kick for our 4th goal, brilliant

John Neals team, who, IMHO, should have got to the FAC final, if not won it

Remember that cup game well...........thought I was going to see World Cup winners give us a lesson in football and for the first quarter of an hour it looked like we were going to be slaughtered..then Hughie started to win everything against Moore  and Clyde Best seemed to drift out of game.....Maddren had Hurst in his pocket and it became increasingly obvious that we were running them ragged ............lost all respect for Moore when he started whining every time he got tackled or he got a foul given against him for pulling McIlmoyle's shirt and the episode at the end where he "applauded" ref off pitch with the real Frank Lampard and Bonds just reinforced that....don't know if he was losing his speed over time or just thought he wasn't getting decisions...but it seemed to happen every time he played us...think there was a cartoon in the Gazette showing Downing's legs sticking out of the mud and a caption to the effect that "one day we won't be able to rescue him if he keeps doing that".....think that was a team that had more spirit than skill but when Hughie had one of his good days, he was unplayable, gave the impression that he could just hang in the air and wait till the ball reached him, but my cousin said that it was just timing it right and it was something that you were born with (if you were lucky) ........never seen anyone with that ability play for us since

Boro flashback - This day 7th January 1984

One of the great cup ties from a dark era

Boro 3 Arsenal 2

After going out to Arsenal 3-2 in a 5th round replay the previous season at Highbury after drawing 1-1 at Ayresome Park, we were again drawn at home to Arsenal & Charlie Nicholas, IIRC his 1st FAC game

The mighty Boro had beaten Arsenal's London rivals Chelsea 2-1 a few days before in a 2nd division clash & were up for this 3rd cup match

Boro gained sweet revenge for last season cup exit in North London running out 3-2 winners in an exciting cup tie that had everything

Gary MacDonald scored his 3rd of the season & 5th of his Boro career, MOTM Paul Sugrue, scored his 1st of the season & 4th for the Boro to date & a fantastic bullet header & winner from the late Mick Baxter

Boro were awarded a corner at the famous holgate end, I can still see it to this day from my position in the chicken run, Mick Baxter made his way in to the box & waited for the corner to make his move, Paul Sugrue swung in a corner from the right & Mick Baxter rose above everyone & thundered a header in the roof of the Arsenal net to score our 3rd & the winning goal, it was Micks 6th Boro career goal, his 1st of the season, he scored his 1st home goal against Arsenal in 1982 & scored his final home goal against Arsenal

For all 3 Boro players who scored this day back in 1984 it was their 1st FAC goal for the mighty Boro

I loved the shirt they wore that season

Curtis Fleming
Nigel Pearson - Making debut
Steve Vickers
Clayton Blackmore - Making debut
Alan Moore
Jamie Pollock
Bryan Robson - Making debut

Boro flashback - 18th August 1989

Boro 4 Wolves 2

Boro started the season back in the 2nd division after a brief spell in the 1st & after, IMHO, unlucky to be relegated

Boro gave debuts to Alan Comfort from Orient  & Trevor Putney from Norwich, 2 very exciting signing to hopefully help us achieve a swift  return to the top flight

With goals from Slaven 2, Proctor & a rare Davenport strike, with us playing exciting football with a new exciting winger in Comfort the aggressive Putney in midfield it looked good for the Boro, fingers crossed we can maintain it

Boro team

Kevin Poole

Gary Parkinson

Nicky Mohan

Tony Mowbray

Trevor Putney

Gary Paalster, his final home game before his transfer to Man Utd

Bernie Slaven

Mark Proctor

Peter Davenport

Paul Kerr

Alan Comfort

Sub

Stuart Ripley

Attendance - 21,727

Remember this game like it was yesterday! Was in posh seats in the north stand!!
