Old Codger 3,039
Remember that cup game well...........thought I was going to see World Cup winners give us a lesson in football and for the first quarter of an hour it looked like we were going to be slaughtered..then Hughie started to win everything against Moore and Clyde Best seemed to drift out of game.....Maddren had Hurst in his pocket and it became increasingly obvious that we were running them ragged ............lost all respect for Moore when he started whining every time he got tackled or he got a foul given against him for pulling McIlmoyle's shirt and the episode at the end where he "applauded" ref off pitch with the real Frank Lampard and Bonds just reinforced that....don't know if he was losing his speed over time or just thought he wasn't getting decisions...but it seemed to happen every time he played us...think there was a cartoon in the Gazette showing Downing's legs sticking out of the mud and a caption to the effect that "one day we won't be able to rescue him if he keeps doing that".....think that was a team that had more spirit than skill but when Hughie had one of his good days, he was unplayable, gave the impression that he could just hang in the air and wait till the ball reached him, but my cousin said that it was just timing it right and it was something that you were born with (if you were lucky) ........never seen anyone with that ability play for us since
