Your 1st Boro game

Recommended Posts

Unfortunately I can't remember mine, late 1971 was when my dad 1st took me, I remember my 1st FAC match, which was the 18th January 1972 v Man City, Boro won 1-0 courtesy of a John Hickton goal

My 1st away game was v Preston 11th November 1972, Boro winning 1-0, again, big John getting the only goal of the game

1990 the Zenith Data Systems Cup Final at Wembley. I didn’t even have a ticket but managed to blag my way in, the exuberance of youth I suppose. My only problem was that I ended up in the Chelsea end behind the goal. Bernie Slaven nearly got me killed when he hit the outside of the post around the 65th minute. I reacted in an obvious way and the Chelsea fans turned on me. I had to be rescued by the Steward’s and got thrown out 😂😂😂

Boro vs Norwich 3-3. I had a soft spot for Norwich back then as I loved the colour green so my loyalties were split that game celebrating both teams goals.

smogsterking, final game of our relegation season, Andy Collett made his home debut in goal, his 2nd appearance, he made his away debut the previous week at Sheff Weds in a 3-2 Boro win

I think Norwich finished 3rd that season, qualifying for Europe

I had been to a home game against Bolton in the 90s at the Riverside which I only remember walking back from 'cause it was *** down. And I think I went to a 0-0 draw against Charlton in the early 2000s with a school trip.

But I always think of the 5-3 against Brum after the Cup win as my first proper game, though.

My first game was May 6th 1980 against Liverpool.  A birthday treat from my uncle. My 8th birthday.

I don't remember much of the game other than thinking football was a fantastic game at night (still prefer a night game to this day) and the total madness when we scored (Shearer) in the last few minutes.

Middlesbrough 1-0 Liverpool

March 16, 1962.....Boro 4 Brighton 0......I thought all Boro games would be like that.....My Dad got me in on a squeeze and said that I shouldn't get too attached to them as they would always find a way to break your heart ..but when are eight, you always think you know best........god, I feel old 😞

    • You make it sound too easy 😋 I genuinly doubt Ayala, Clayton and Howson had any decent interest that would promt us to sell. Clayton I think we'd have sold fairly cheaply. I think the players haven't been willing to just sign the first reduced contract we offered and probably wants to see how things developed and whether any teams would show interest. We can't force them to sign lesser contracts and we can't make other teams buy them. The offers would have to make sense too. It would probably be better to just let Ayalas contract run down than sell him for less than a million last summer.
    • But we knew there contract were running down before this season started and talks with these players regarding contracts should have been held pre season and those who wouldn't sign new deals should have been moved on in the summer, ok I agree moving on Shotton, Gestede and Johnson was tried but Clayton, Howson and in particular Ayala would of still commanded half decent fees
    • Thats a bit harsh. You can only sell if there is interest and we can't just offer the players the same terms. Of the players out of contract I'm only interested in keeping Ayala and Howson anyway if they agree to reduced terms in line with the financial realities. The rest aren't really good enough and wouldn't ever command a decent fee. I'm sure we would have gladly sold players like Clayton, Gestede and Johnson in the summer if any other teams wanted them.
    • I thnnk you are overthinking it a bit. It doesn't sound like we want to sell Fry to finance a deal for Gibson. However we will accept a bid for Fry if it's above our valuation. If some desperate PL club swoops in and offers, say, 15 million we'd be mad not to accept as there is no way he is worth that much. Fry has yet to reach the levels Gibson showed while with us, so a match fit Gibson is better than Fry's current level. I really don't want to lose Fry as I think he has a great future with us. I want them both and it sounds doable. Defering the last 4.3 million payments from Burnley isn't the best, but a total deal for 6 million for Gibson sounds almost unbelievable and if he falls in line with the current wage structure we should be all over that. At 26 he has at least 7 good years in him and might even make himself attractive to another big move if we aren't promoted.
    • We've always been a selling club if the price is right no one has ever thought we weren't right? It was 8 years ago Mowbray was pleading for people to buy pints and pies to help his budgets. My issue isn't so much with selling if the money is right with Fry I remember the murmurs in the summer was we wanted double and some what Burnley offered (8 million) so if that kind of ballpark 15-16 million comes in now I imagine we'd probably sell him. My issue is we make all these great strides financially by selling Randolph, selling Flint, selling Braithwaite, selling Bamford, cutting Downing loose and then the first shiny object that comes along in Ben Gibson and everyone (apparently including his uncle) just thinks we need him right now for a 12th placed push? I get you're saying him and Fry deals aren't linked but Dyche is king of shithousery it's no coincidence he's said all window he needs 4 CBs so Gibson's going nowhere and now suddenly the Fry talks popped up as the Gibson rumours heated up lately, 1 in and 1 out is how he'll view it we won't get what we supposedly want unless Dyche gets what he wants I just don't see it. I see the logic from Dyche in trading out Gibson for Fry the days of Gibson playing for England and being sold up the League for 40/50 million are gone but you get Fry for 15 million he's a ballplayer who can step into midfield with the ball not hard to see how high his pricetag can go in 2 years time. I just don't get where the sense is at all in taking Gibson back it doesn't get us anywhere even if they owe us 8 million on him and we take him back on a write off I'd rather just take the 8 million or whatever they owe over time and sign a new CB for 2-3 million at most if needs be I'd say this about us signing any CB on the wages and for the fee Gibson would cost in this league you just do not need to invest silly money in defenders in my opinion and Gibbo is in the silly money bracket for fee and wages I don't like it at all.
