Because you're looking at it with the benefit of hindsight. At the time we'd just been humped 5-1 at Liverpool and we hadn't won in the league for three months. The idea of going up against a likely relegation rival without most of our senior players probably didn't seem all that appealing to Robson. Link to post Share on other sites

As far as I remember we actually thought we had been given the OK by the FA and had done everything correct. It's not like we just didn't show up and didn't bother. Link to post Share on other sites

We approached the FA and were warned what could happen, we looked at what had happened in the past to teams who failed to fulfil fixtures (a fine) and decided it was worth it.
