Boro v Huddersfield 1- 0 (Spence)

Recommended Posts

Maybe not the complete reason for his mistakes, but as he is totally right footed, it can’t be easy playing on the left, especially as the left  one of three in the centre. There was one time yesterday when he tried to move the ball from his left to his right foot and got closed down. That made it look like a mistake, but it was really a consequence of playing him where we are doing. Some of his best performances came when deputising for Ayala on the right side of defence.  I suspect if George was fit, Fry would be the central defender of the three and he would be a lot more comfortable.

When looking at how we have performed and how we have improved we need to look at the 4 phases of play.   1) Without the ball. We have really improved in this, other than the Leeds match. We

Yeah Bristol City want him.

Put it this way, we're losing money on him if he goes.

I think that's a given even if we got what I'd consider a good fee from him right now, speaking respective of the position we're in. We absolutely overpaid when you consider we sent a better striker to Leeds for less.

Losing Randolph, Britt and Ayala or Fry.

Still happy?

Lol. Dont go p*ssing on my bonfire please, Denzel.

On a serious note I can live with Randolph leaving (partly because i accepted he was leaving a month or so ago) but hope others stay. If we get Ayala on a new contract in January i will be ecstatic.

His value in our books should be around 6 million considering he is 2,5 years into a 4 year deal. I suspect we want to be able to make a slight profit on that to reinvest directly so I can see us wanting about 8 million. We’re not going to get our money back but we should at least be covering his value in our books. The rest will have been written off over the time he’s been here.

If we can get anything more than £8m for him, we've probably done alright in the circumstances to be fair. £8m for him and his wages off the books surely represents a huge step in the right direction for the finances, if certainly not the quality of the squad.

Fry has been in and around the first team for about 4 years, but he started this season with maybe only 30 starts as a CB, and another 20 at RB.

He has hit a bit of second season syndrome, in a struggling team, asked to play on the left of a back 3, even though he is right footed, and after having no preseason and a major operation.

It would be silly to give him up as a dud right now, he will come back stronger again. Ideally, with our squad I would have him centrally behind Ayala and Friend. Those two attack the ball and he sweeps up.

We clearly need a left footed centre half, as even Shotton who played on that side is right footed. Also no different if Nathan Wood came into the team.

I don't think Fry's poor displays have come from him being right-footed, though. Not all right-footed defenders will play it behind their left-back constantly when switching play across the back. Saw it again a couple of times against Huddersfield, he makes it more difficult for Coulson. And when we'd done well to break through the press at the back, even Pears found his man comfortably with a pass between two Huddersfield players, then Fry ends that potential move by playing it carelessly into midfield and we lose it.

I've seen him lose a lot of his aerial battles this season too, I feel. He's a big lad and I feel he should be winning more of those challenges and sometimes he's perhaps not anticipating when the ball will drop correctly.

Not without positives though, I like Fry when he tries to break into midfield. I think him and Howson both do that well when they have the opportunity, it's just still the final pass from Fry that is sometimes lacking though I guess that's not surprising when you compare him to, you know, a midfielder by trade.

And in terms of keeping a general shape at the back, he does hold his position well as Coulson goes forward and comes back, he covers him really well, Howson sometimes gets caught out (even if he does bust a gut to get back to where he needs to be) whereas Fry seems to cover his man a bit better. The gap he may or may not leave behind him isn't his responsibility when Coulson is coming back and the opposition have it out on the right-wing. Either a midfielder (Saville, Wing) needs to cover the space or the back-line needs to shift across and cover.
