Alternatively I would have expected with more defensive player fit, that we wouldn't have let some of those goals in. I mean we are feeling a little hard done by, losing last minute, with a full defence out that is as good as any of the top 6.  Friend-Ayala-Shotton-Dijksteel

I think if you asked many fans to name they favoured back 4, only Ayala from your list would make it.

If you think that is our best back 4 I'm horrified.

I didn't say it's our BEST, but that it's better than most of the teams above us. Most of those teams would kill for those players

A fully fit Friend is a better fullback than Coulson, not a better wingback though.

Dijksteel we don't know, but he was bought as a specialist RB and if fit and on form then he would probably play to allow Howson back into his natural midfield place.  Shotton is bog standard champo, but would still get in many teams above us

Spaces don't score goals .. mark the men, please .. Incredibly that the leagues top scorer isn't marked at all for the 3rd goal

space is something that all good players look to exploit. The art of defending is protecting space

Meh, it's a bit of both. If you're tight to your men all the time, the men just move and clear spaces for those not being marked or those not quick enough to keep up with them. If you're just marking spaces, things like that happen. I'm all for marking the spaces but having one person (probably a holding midfielder) keep an eye on a player like him. But players like him score that many goals because they exploit defences that mark space or men too much. Needs to be a balance.

It's simple, the closest player to the opponent with the ball should close and press. The two closest opposing players must be marked. After that you can close the space. Watkins as only what 8-10 yards away from the winger?  He should be marked and it's a basic error not to.
