Good post and some well thought through points. The way I read it comes down to this quote from you:

Whatever success we hypothetically achieve under them, our identity would be intrinsically tied to the profits of a German energy drink company. We exist primarily not as a club that achieves success through the unity it has cultivated but as a pawn in some greedy game. That runs counter to everything I love about football and everything I love about supporting Middlesbrough FC.

I get what you are saying but we're already a pawn in some greedy game, however we're just an insignificant pawn that no one beyond Boro fans actually think twice about. Outside of Middlesbrough we're nothing and no one bats an eyelid about our performances. Football is what it is nowadays, and that's not going to change unless everything colapses.

Whether we're owned by Bulkhaul owners or Red Bull owners dosn't really matter. We wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for a wealthy businessman and we won't taste succes if it isn't for a wealthy businessman. I'm not going to stop supporting Boro even if we stay in the Championship forever, but I would like some succes. Football is just funnier that way.

Right then, first of all to address borodane referring to a ‘Middle Eastern despot’. I’m going to assume that’s a reference to Man City’s owners. They are morally repulsive, and if I was a Man City fa

Hope not considering your user name. 😬🤣🤣

Blackburn got relegated with 51 points the season we were in the Prem. 4 of the last 5 seasons, 42 points has been enough. Comparing both 16/17, 18/19 and this season after ~32 games, the bottom

Red Bull aren't a German company, they're half Austrian and half Thai owned.

And do you not think the success of Middlesbrough FC is intrinsically linked to Steve Gibson's business interests? He doesn't run this football club for fun.

I wouldn't begin to suggest Steve Gibson is of a socialist mindset but I do think there is a difference between owning something you love because you love it rather than owning something to help make you money. I suspect at the very least that Gibson would see a bit of a difference between how he views owning Middlesbrough and Bulkhaul.

He owns both in order to make money.

Just think if you're going to slag something off you should actually know some basic facts about it first, mate.

And SG is a business man, he owns businesses in order to make money. Middlesbrough FC is a business.

It’s completely different though. Last year, Bulkhaul turned over profits of £40.1 million pounds. Middlesbrough reported losses of £6.4 million. Go figure.

Hitler was half Austrian so it makes you think, doesn't it?

I’m not saying Middlesbrough fc isn’t a business but it’s a lot more palatable than a company like Red Bull. See the points made by Wilson, Brunners, and alexutb

Knowing basic facts is crucial to a convincing case I agree, luckily for me the mistake I made was entirely irrelevant to the point of my post so its effect was limited. But I do applaud your attempt to be as pedantic as possible at every possible turn.

Yes. But he still runs Middlesbrough FC as a business just like Red Bull GmbH would if they took over, is my point.

Your point actually seemed to be that he handles his business at Middlesbrough just the same way he handles his business at Bulkhaul and I don't see how you can support that.

Blame @Changing Times (my dad) for that.

I think the game is in desperate need of restructuring. At the very least a wage cap. If I had it my way, I’d move towards an NFL style system. It doesn’t solve the issue of business owners compromising a club’s identity but it would mean success is more dependent on strategy than money.

The NFL only works as it is because it is in a monopoly position.  No bugger else plays American Football at that level or even close to it.  The start up league they tried last year collapsed inside a few months.  The new XFL could end up going the same way as the level of interest just doesn't seem to be there and never will be. They tried the NFL Europe thing years ago and that only worked, while it was operating, as a result of being propped up by the NFL.  So all of the money and resources are concentrated in the hands of 32 clubs.  Football is nothing like that.

Sport in the USA is organised in a completely different way to most of the world.  The NFL has no competition regarding employees or other organisations.  Players are funnelled to them via the Collegiate system, which is also a monopoly of it's own, and that essentially works hand in hand with the NFL to preserve both of their positions.  This only works in what amounts to a closed, fairly centralised system.  Football definitely doesn't share those characteristics.

It's also a bit of a weird one to want an NFL style system whilst railing against the commercialisation of the game and the domination of money.  The NFL is solely there to be a cash cow for a handful of already incredibly wealthy people and the whole sport is commercialised beyond probably any sports not inside the USA.

Not trying to have a pop at you, it's just that I don't think football could or should be like the NFL or the NBA but you can bet that the current owners in football would love it to be because of the potential to increase their own profits/investments.

I think they'd probably run it in different ways to be fair.  Running a business isn't a catch all thing, there are different ways to operate.

Also, I thought you should know that you were an accident and me and your mam never wanted you 🚮
