COVID-19 Life now and beyond

Recommended Posts

After the hundreds of billions of pounds the UK Govt is pledging to try and support the economy, I think using words like "megalomaniac" to describe them is quite offensive. I'm not a fan of Boris at all, but in relatively little time, they have unveiled an astonishingly detailed and unprecedented package of support for British workers, and one which puts most other nations in the shade.

It's tragic that we need such economic stimuli, and i still think we're shutting down too much too soon, but other people seem to think we haven't shut down enough quickly enough, so maybe the balance is about right. At least a lot more households should be able to keep the wolf from the door after today's announcements.

I had my test results back and they were positive for Covid-19.. So lucky that I just had the mild symptoms!!

Hope everyone's doing well and keeping healthy! Haven't posted for a few months due to being busy and the lack of football, but had a gradual read through this thread. Crazy looking back at the f

Current new measures announced by the Government have to be applauded and at this time Boris does seem to be the right man for the job in leadership.

There is a real sense of relief for most workers in terms of pay and I am aware they are acting quickly on the promises made. As long as the employers provide information quickly for all those involved.

Looking at positive news I hear China has announced no new cases for the third day running save those who have brought it back into China

Boris has had very little do with this, so no, he isn't.

Yeah I'm not convinced by Bozza yet, I think Rishi Sunak should be the one getting the plaudits.

Plus the fact that a lot of these policies being applauded are quite socialist in nature leads me to believe Jezza would be doing a similarly applauded job at least.

I personally believe Labour would be doing a better job, it's very ironic that the Tories are using socialist methods to support the country right now!

I did want to put "if not better" but thought I would be more diplomatic.

Even Corbyn must be laughing at the Tories effectively nationalising the private sector though

Well thats the crux of the problem.

To slow / contain the virus you need to isolate people. But to do that you need to stop them doing so many things that contribute to the economy, which keeps money flowing and businesses operating.

Also people still need money to be able to buy essentials, pay their mortgages / rent, bills etc. They also need jobs to go back to.

As far as I can tell there is no correct answer...you can only go on the advice of your medical experts and by watching what other countries do (and whether their measures are effective or not). Obviously different experts have given different advice in other countries - hence the differing responses.

I believe the government has done its utmost to limit the disruption and potential hardship that goes with effectively shutting the country down by delaying it as long as possible. Both to limit the economic impact and to lessen the likelihood of the population succumbing to cabin fever and ignoring what the government tells them to do.

Considering the UK is still well behind most other countries, in terms of recorded cases and deaths, I think they've done a pretty good job so far.

Just got an email from my employer informing me that i'm classed as a Key Worker. Doesn't help at all though as I have the car and my daughter's school is too far away realistically for my wife to walk to and back from every day.

Grandparents have been told to self-isolate so they can't help out at all.

Luckily it's only Nursery she's missing, my wife can probably teach her everything at home!

The one good aspect is I guess it means my job is very safe, that's one reassuring thing 🙂

I thought you better than your statement. I guess we can all misjudge others.

OK so how would you handle the situation?
I believe Boris is listening to professionals and acting accordingly. He has lead without fear and should be commended.

I'm in no way qualified to say how I would handle it better, nor did I say I could.

I believe the Tory capitalist nature has led to non-vital businesses being kept open longer than they should, and that some of the policies, such as 80% of workers pay being guaranteed are more reactionary than precautionary. I think a more social minded government would have put these changes into place earlier.

Of course I am just hypothesising as I don't have all the information available to me but we are two weeks behind Italy and even further behind China, and could have used them as an example sooner.

Also, as I said before, even if you think the current government is doing well, I believe the policies getting the most plaudits are down to Rishi Sunak rather than Boris

Well any Prime Minister / President is only the figurehead / mouthpiece for their government (lets ignore dictatorships at this time).

We all know the real work is done by the Cabinet, Civil Service and other organisations (e.g. the NHS).

But a figurehead is still important for communicating to the nation exactly what is being done. Would still rather have Boris' positivity than old misery guts Corbyn. 😉

I find it ironic people blame a leader for indecisive or bad decisions but refuse to give credit when they do there job, and lead. Given the world was / is learning and a rolling wave plan crucial to being able to best serve the nation as the virus spreads, then I believe the government to date has done its best.

At this time of crisis when experts are still learning about the virus and stress testing theories, then I don’t believe its the time for propaganda, judgment or politics. I do believe we can all do our bit and act with dignity, remain calm and assist others less fortunate.
