Born in Leeds on 22 March 1999, Tavernier joined the Middlesbrough FC Academy in 2013 from Newcastle United.
Having established himself as a regular with the U18s and U23s in the 2016/2017 season, making 24 appearances in the process, he made his first appearance with the senior team on 22 August 2018, in a Carabao Cup tie against Scunthorpe United where Middlesbrough won 3-0.
After his maiden season with the first team where he managed 5 appearances and a goal, he joined relegation-threatened EFL League One outfit, Milton Keynes Dons in January on loan until the end of the season. His contributions over the seven games where he featured, were not enough to help them escape relegation that season.
Marcus Tavernier, who is the brother to Rangers FC captain James Tavernier, played 28 games for Middlesbrough in the 2018/2019 season and scored four times.
