Paddy James Coleman McNair was born on 27 April 1995 in Ballyclare, Northern Ireland. He started training with Manchester United at age 12 and was eventually signed in 2011. Between 2013 and 2015, he featured sparingly for the U18s and U23s. However, his consistent progress under coach Paul McGuiness earned him a recommendation into the senior team lead by Louis Van Gaal.
McNair was handed his senior debut on 27 September 2014 by the Dutch tactician in a time when the United backline was depleted due to injuries. Nevertheless, the Northern Ireland international impressed and received plaudits from the coach and fans. He would go on to make 15 more appearances for the Red Devils that season.
After an underwhelming 2015/2016 season at the Theatre of Dreams, he was sold to Sunderland in a joint deal involving him and Donald Love in the summer of 2016.
With the Black Cats, he played 28 games and scored seven goals in his two seasons at the club. The Northen Ireland defender joined Middlesbrough in June 2018 on a four-year deal.
