Born on 30 October 1988 in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent, England. The Stoke City Academy graduate signed his first professional deal for the club in 2007. Before he broke into the Stoke City senior team in the tail end of 2010/2011 season, he had loan spells at Altrincham, Tranmere Rovers, and Barnsley.
In April 2011, he made his debut for the Potters in a 0-0 draw away to Blackpool. Subsequently, he made a couple of appearances in the centre back and right back positions for Stoke City, and his first goal was a late winner against West Bromwich Albion on 28 August in a Premier League tie.
That season, he made 14 starts for the senior side. Also, he was named the club’s young player of the season.
On 2nd September 2013, he joined Wigan Athletic on a three-month loan spell where he scored one goal in his 14 appearances for the Latics. On 24 January 2015, he joined Derby County on a two and a half year deal.
In July 2016 Birmingham City, where he had previously spent six months as a loanee, signed him on a three-year deal worth about £360,000.
Shotton formed a formidable defensive partnership with Micheal Morrison and they both contributed to the team's ability to press teams higher up the pitch. Before his £3.2 million move to Middlesbrough in August 2017, he played 44 games and scored two goals for the Blues.
Shotton's first appearance in a Boro shirt came in a 2-2 draw at home with Brentford in a league tie and he scored his first goal in a 2-1 win away to Sheffield Wednesday on December 23 2017. Overall, he made 28 appearances for the Riverside outfit in his first season.
